Class of XII:
Hanging Garden to the Amazon Forest

Posted on August 29, 2025 by Arit K Bose

Hello Class 12!
Hanging garden of Babylon (some say may have existed in Nineveh, the Assyrian capital)! Remember, you may have studied in your school days as one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. Well, till class 10, your life was such a stroll amidst the Babylonian Garden. Beautiful, majestic, Oh! What a life. Now that you are in class 12, you are in the Amazon Rainforest. The largest and most biodiverse tropical forest. Doorway to unknown, uncharted territories!
Well, dear, you are now in a high-stakes mission.
The weight of board exams, the challenging terrain to cross.
Then the competitive tests and future aspirations brew up a perfect storm even in your cuppa coffee (or Bournvita if that’s what you prefer).
But.
What if the secret to success isn't just grinding harder, but understanding the adventurous Amazon of yours with a mindset for sustainable performance! This isn't just about surviving; it's about thriving.
Welcome to your anti-burnout map.

  • Beyond the Timetable: Focus Ecosystem

First and foremost, what is FOCUS?

Well, think of a spotlight in a room. Even though there is light in the room, when you turn the spotlight on one specific thing or area, then automatically every other area becomes bleak compared to the spotlighted territory. Focus is that spotlight in your brain. That means you have garnered all your attention and mental energy in that one thing, one task, one thought, and the rest is ignoré.

When you watch your favourite movie, you look straight at the screen. Totally absorbed, even when your friend nudges you to pick up caramel popcorn, you just shove it away, and your eyes are still on the screen. Your phone buzzes in your Jeans pocket, you simply switch it off over your pants, not bothering to pull the phone out to check who is calling. Your eyes are still on the screen.

That, my friend, is focus. If you do it in the multiplex, also with your girlfriend and boyfriend (as per the scenarios), or any other matter close to your heart, then for sure you can do it for your studies, because that is closest to your heart for life; Gyan, KNOWLEDGE.

Just one quick thought, why do you prefer Popcorn with caramel, Q Bhai! Plain and simple popcorn khao na!

So, design a "Focus Ecosystem"—an environment and rhythm that minimizes resistance and maximizes output.

  • Class XII Focus The 90-Minute Ultradian Sprint:

Human brains are generally able to focus optimally for 4 to 5 hours a day, and in blocks, I mean chunks. Research on ultradian rhythms suggests we work best in 90-minute focused sprints followed by 20/30 minutes of a cool break (my suggestion is a 15 to 20-minute cool break should suffice to rejuvenate the Arrow. ‘Cool’ here means to stay calm and quiet).
Structure your day into these cycles, 90+15 and again 90+15, and so on.
Now, for your preset routine, one such chunk could be to solve 30 MCQs on Magnetism and Matter, the next could be from Biology, and then Chemistry. Specific chapter-wise activities.
This is more sustainable and effective than a vague, longish hours of plan.
Of course, needless to say, this program should be noted and hung/pasted where it is always visible to you.

Activity: a 30-minute or so task of simply listening to a particular music that builds up your Focus. For that, you can download the app called BrainWave, dial in HZ, select Focus, and it'll play the binaural beats. Do use your headphones, and after that, you may start your study or activities. Note - Guidance is required from experts.

  • The Devil: Oh yes, that’s a little harsh, but your phone is that devil. it's like a slot machine where your only task is to keep pulling the lever to get your lucky number jackpot. Even before you realize it hijacks your attention.
During your 90-minute slot, the apple or orange or whatever phone you use should be dumped under the mattress, and on airplane mode and in a faraway room. So that you will not tend to check the latest global economic gibberish, or about the Russia-Ukraine war, etc.
Use your break to check your phone for any important messages. If there are none, keep it aside and enjoy a calm and quiet break.
This single good habit proves you are a MAN! And for the fairer gender, a Rani LaxmiBai!
(And mark my words, your parents will be at the top of the world, and they might even commit you to some crazy stuff. But don’t bet on it, as you do understand they got carried away…).

  • Context Switching - No monkey jumping: yes, we do share common ancestors, but don't jump say from Physics problem-solving to Geography memorization. In your routine, plan the blocks separately for example, the calculative math block and the theory block. That way, you keep your brain in the same mode, reducing mental drag.

I have already tested your patience (for which you may check out Adhuna 2), so let's close this with another task.

Activity: 3-3-3 Grounding Rule. Very simple and at times funny too! It helps to manage anxiety and calm your mind so that you stay ‘at Present’ and regain your control.
Use the devil, the one under the mattress, to find your Angel!

Adios.
